Abstract
This presentation introduces the evolution of my research in robotic manipulation, from my Ph.D. studies at Ritsumeikan University to my current research on AI-based humanoid robots.
I will first present my research on object grasping based on the Blind Grasping developed in the Arimoto Laboratory, including its extension from two-dimensional to three-dimensional manipulation. I will then introduce my subsequent research in Korea, covering robot arm control based on the Virtual Spring-Damper Hypothesis, the development of robot hands, and dexterous in-hand manipulation. The talk will also highlight the technology transfer of one of the developed robot hands, which was commercialized as the Allegro Hand.
The second part of the presentation focuses on dual-arm humanoid robots, including bimanual manipulation and assembly. Finally, I will discuss my recent experience with Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models, their current limitations in robotic manipulation, and a future research direction that integrates VLA with model-based control to achieve more reliable and dexterous manipulation.
Title & Abstract
From Robotics Foundations to Soft Robotics: Designing Adaptive and Intelligent Machines
My time at the Department of Robotics laid the foundation for my research career, particularly in understanding how robotic systems can interact safely, adaptively, and intelligently with the physical world. Since graduating in 2012, I have pursued research in soft robotics, with a focus on compliant mechanisms, soft actuators, sensing, and control for robots that can operate robustly in uncertain environments.
In this talk, I will reflect on how the education and research experience at the Department of Robotics shaped my approach to research. I will then introduce my current work in soft robotics and discuss how softness, embodied intelligence, and materials can expand the capabilities of future robotic systems.
Finally, I will share several perspectives on the opportunities and challenges of soft robotics, especially for developing robots that work more closely with people and society.
